Security checks at Fiumicino Airport | ADR
Security checks at Fiumicino Airport
Starting from 26 July 2025, in compliance with the new provisions of the European Commission, liquids in hand baggage may be carried in containers with a capacity of up to 2 litres.
Liquid containers with a capacity of more than 2L may be carried in hand baggage only if empty; otherwise, they must be placed in checked baggage at check-in.
Thanks to the new-generation EDS C3 scanners in use at Fiumicino Airport, electrical and electronic devices such as laptops and tablets may continue to remain inside hand baggage, without having to be separated or removed.
Traditional X-ray security screening procedures remain unchanged at Fiumicino for direct flights to the USA or Israel operated by airlines that check in at Terminal 1 (click here to check the relevant Terminal) and for transit passengers arriving from non-Schengen countries not covered by “one stop security” agreements. These procedures require passengers to separate liquids from hand baggage (containers with a maximum capacity of 100 ml, inside a transparent plastic bag up to a maximum of 1L) as well as electrical and electronic devices.
The restrictions do not apply to LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols and Gels) needed during the journey for medical purposes or for a special dietary regimen, including baby food. These may be allowed in hand baggage after separation and a dedicated security check.
ATTENTION: If you are transiting through another airport, please check with your airline whether any restrictions on carrying LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols and Gels) are in force at that airport.
The time required to complete security checks may vary, even during the same day. Passengers are therefore advised to arrive at the airport well in advance.
Place valuables and cash in the tray so that they are not immediately visible to the passengers ahead of you or behind you in the queue, for example by placing them in a jacket pocket.
As far as possible, keep visual contact with the tray.
Please remember that ADR Security staff do not take custody of items placed in the tray and cannot identify which passenger used a specific tray.
Security checks are carried out to prevent dangerous or prohibited objects from being loaded onto the aircraft.
How to prepare for security checks
To plan your arrival at the airport, consider the whole pre-departure process: Fiumicino airport check-in, the relevant Terminal and access to the gates. If you need to check in at Rome Fiumicino, go to the airport check-in desk indicated for your airline before reaching the security area.
Before reaching the checkpoints, check the contents of your hand baggage and pay attention to any items that may be subject to restrictions or bans. If you have an item that is not allowed, instructions for disposing of objects are available before the hand baggage check.
Security checks with children, expectant mothers and strollers
If you are departing and travelling with children or you are an expectant mother, you can use the Family Lane. For security checkpoints not equipped with the new EDS C3 technology, please follow a few simple steps before screening.
- Remove children’s food from your bag, such as feeding bottles, milk, fruit juices, water, other drinks, baby food and soups. Place each container in the tray to make the check easier and faster.
- Liquid, cream, gel and paste foods, such as drinks, soups and syrups, may be taken on board after the check only if a child aged 10 or under is travelling.
- For the stroller: remove the rain cover, toys, changing bag and any other accessories; place everything in the tray and on the belt; have the child get out or hold the child in your arms; then fold the stroller and ask security staff for help placing it in the X-ray machine.
